The eyes of a person are often the first thing we look at when talking to somebody. They reflect our emotions, and that is therefore the reason why the eyes are often referred to as the window to a person’s soul. They contribute decisively to a person’s charisma and attractiveness. Certain signs of ageing in particular around the eyes are therefore found to be disturbing and unaesthetic.

Drooping upper eyelids, for example, are intensified as a result of excessive skin at the upper eye lids and also often by fat deposits under the skin in the inner corners of the eye. That leads to a fatigued or sometimes even sad looking appearance which, in many cases, does not match the biological age of the remaining face – lots of patients miss the alert, fresh or dynamic appearance that they once had and no longer feel completely comfortable in their own skin.

The excessive skin at the upper eyelids often leads to an intentional or automatic lifting of the eyebrows to compensate the lax skin of the eyelids. The consequence is then not only the development of intensive forehead wrinkles, but also tensions on the forehead which, in turn, cause headaches and a feeling of fatigue in the eye region.

Ultimately, a large amount of excess skin at the upper eyelids may even restrict your field of vision, in particular when looking upwards and to the side. For this reason, a tightening of the upper eyelids (blepharoplasty) is essentially recommended for such a person concerned.

Confident and fresh look thanks to upper eyelid tightening

Within the scope of tightening the upper eyelids, excess skin and fat is removed, with the surgical intervention at our clinic requiring planning with a subtle approach. The seams are positioned in the skin fold and are thus hardly visible after surgery.

After the operation bruises generally develop which, however, disappear completely one to two weeks later. The stitches can be removed after seven days. It is, however, recommended to wait at least two weeks before using contact lenses or eye makeup to ensure that the cut will be able to heal well and will not cause any problems.

Tightening of the upper eyelid (correcting the upper eyelid) can have an excellent effect: Your eyes will look visually significantly larger, thus giving you a fresher and more radiant appearance. At the same time your eyes will look less stressed, the feeling of tension around the eyes and on your forehead will disappear. Our aim in performing this surgery is to ensure that the result looks perfectly natural and matches your face optimally – after all, after eyelid tightening at our clinic you should be fully satisfied and feel beautiful.

In particular, in connection with planning operative surgery at the eyes and/or in the eye area, you will surely have some questions and would like to obtain more information about the possible prerequisites and risks. For this reason we have outlined some of the most frequently asked questions concerning an upper eyelid lift in the following for your convenience. Of course, we will answer all of your further questions within the scope of a consultation session prior to surgery.

How long does an upper eyelid lift take?

Strictly speaking the duration depends on the scope of the surgical intervention. You should consider approx. 1 hour, but it can take up to 3 hours in some cases, if it is necessary to correct pronounced drooping upper eyelids.

Will scars remain after the operation?

Fine scars will remain after surgery, however, these will be hardly noticed. The cuts are positioned in such a way that the scars lie at the lash line and/or in the eyelid fold. That will make them almost invisible, whereby eye make-up can be used to touch up the scars.

Will the shape of my eyes change as a result of an eyelid correction?

Only excessive fat and skin tissue is removed, thus the shape of your eyes will not be changed. The operation will, however, have an effect on your facial expression – after all, that is the motivation for an upper or lower eyelid lift. A fresh, relaxed facial expression with alert, open eyes and a clear view is observed. You therefore might think that the shape of your eyes has changed.

What kind of complications and risks must I take into consideration?

Certain risks cannot be principally avoided in surgery. Among others haematomas, swelling, inflammation, wound healing disorder or scar problems may occur. Before the surgical intervention you will be examined with regard to your health condition and informed of all possible complications. As a rule the common problems, such as pain, irritation of the conjunctiva and cornea will subside after 1-2 weeks. After about 2 weeks you can use make up and, if applicable, wear contact lenses. The correcting surgery at the upper eyelid requires a precise procedure, which means that you should rely on a reputable medical specialist disposing of sufficient experience.

How long will I be unable to work after an upper eyelid lift?

In the first 2-3 days after surgery you should cool the region around the eyes, refrain from strenuous activities and should lie in bed with a slightly raised upper part of the body. The stitches are removed after 7 days. You should also take one week of leave. The period in which you are unable to work may last longer. Aftercare check-ups will show how the healing process is progressing. You should wait 4 weeks before doing sports or undertaking any strenuous activities. Avoid the solarium or sunbathing for approx. 3 months after surgery.

Will my health insurance take over the costs of an upper eyelid correction?

As this is generally a purely cosmetic / aesthetic intervention you will have to take over the costs yourself. In seldom cases, if the drooping upper eyelids are so distinct that your sight is impaired, the costs may be assumed by your health insurance.

Are the results of an upper eyelid lift permanent?

The result of an upper eyelid lift normally lasts for several years. On the other hand the natural ageing process cannot be stopped, but the effect achieved by the upper eyelid lift is normally maintained. If the upper eyelids once again droop drastically in the course of time due to mimic, life style or skin quality and begin to be disturbing, the operation can be repeated after 10 years. If, however, your lacrimal sacs have been removed within the scope of a lower eyelid lift, the result will be final, because all fat deposits have been removed.

Is the operation performed under general anaesthesia?

Twilight sleep or local anaesthesia is sufficient to remove drooping eyelids and/or for an upper eyelid lift. Hospitalisation is not necessary.

How much does an upper eyelid correction cost?

It is difficult to give a general reply, as the costs depend on the initial situation and on the exact procedure. In general, costs of about 2,000 € should be taken into consideration.

Do I have to wear a bandage after surgery?

No a bandage is not necessary. The scar is only covered with a fine strip of plaster. It is recommended to cool the eye region to reduce bruising and swelling. You will also be given eye drops to keep your eyes moist and to protect them. The plaster strips will be removed together with the sutures after about 1 week.
